Kanha National Park & Pench Tiger Reserve

Kanha National Park dwells in the central Indian highlands and amazingly hosts nearly half of India's forests. The Kanha Reserve is located in the Maikal Range which forms the eastern base of the triangular Satpura Range. The park lies 160 km (100 miles) southeast of Jabalpur and 270 km (170 miles) northeast of the city of Nagpur (Maharashtra).

The lush sal and bamboo forest, grassy meadows and ravines of Kanha provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling for his famous novel "Jungle Book". The Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh came into being in 1955 and forms the core of Kanha Tiger Reserve, created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The park's landmark achievement is the preservation of the rare hardground Swamp Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near extinction. Stringent conservation programs for the overall protection of thepark's flora and fauna, makes Kanha one of the most well maintained National Parks of Asia.

A heightened attraction within the park is Bamni Dadar, popularly known as sunset point that offers the most awe-inspiring backdrop of the sunset against grazing Sambhars and Gaurs, magnifying the natural splendour of the area. Aside from its diverse wildlife and bird population, the frequent sightings of the tigers roaming in the wild at Kanha Tiger Reserve, remain the most popular draw.

Pench National Park (Tiger Reserve) nestling in the lower southern reaches of the satpuda hills is named after Pench river, meandering through the park from north to south. The area of the present tiger reserve has a glorious history. A description of its natural wealth and richness occurs in Ain-i-Akbari. Pench Tiger Reserve and its neighbourhood is the original setting of Rudyard Kipling's most famous work, The Jungle Book. he flow of Pench river stops in December, what remains are a few scenic and serene pools in the river bed. There are a few perennial springs and tanks. At the southern boundary of park, the Pench river has been dammed for Pench hydroelectic project at Totladoh. At the maximum capacity the reservoir submerges 54 sq kms of the park area. This had been the loss of best valley forest, which was once referred by Sir Rudyard Kipling in his book named "Jungle Book". This large reservoir of Pench with sporadic islands attract a number of winter birds from north. The undulating topography supports a mosaic of vegetation ranging from moist, sheltered valleys to open, dry deciduous forest. Over 1200 species of plants have been recorded from the area including several rare and endangered plants as well as plants of ethno-botanical importance.
