Little Rann of Kutch and Thol bird sanctuary


It is famous as the world's last refuge of the Indian Wild Ass (Khur) for the conservation of which it has been declared as the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary. Though a bleak landscape it is rich in biodiversity and is an ecologically important area for wildlife and many local and migratory waterbirds like cranes, ducks, pelicans, flamingoes and land birds like sand grouse,frankolins and the Indian bustards.It is also home to various unique mammals apart from wild Ass such the Indian Wolf (Canis indica), Desert Fox (Vulpes vulpes pusilla) and Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus).

It is nominated by the Forest department to be a biosphere reserve which are areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems internationally recognized within the framework of UNESCO's Man and Biosphere (MAB) programme. it will focus on conserving biological diversity, research, monitoring and providing sustainable development models, the proposal has been sent to and listed at UNESCO.

Thol lake bird sanctuary is a shallow freshwater body surrounded by marshes on the edge and scrubby forest embarking the sides. The lake sanctuary covering an area of 7 square kilometers was declared officially in 1988 and is also known by the name of Thol Bird Sanctuary.

The shallow water reservoir speckled with reed beds gives it a distinct ambience while being an ideal dwelling for varied species of birds and insects. The agricultural land surrounding the lake provide ample amount of food for quite a number of birds while the hydrological ecosystem takes care of the others. One gets overwhelmed with flocks of bird flying together and crating graphical patterns on the sky while long-legged elongated necked cranes keep stalking for fishes and small insects. The still and serene ambience of the locale gets melodiously symphonized with the echoing of thousands birds and illustrated by the varied movements of these spirited creatures.

A visual treat for any tourist and a treasurable experience for a bird watcher or ornithologists, this place is home to more than 100 species of birds. Cranes, geese, flamingoes, pelicans, egrets, herons, spoonbills, ducks, whistling teals and many other migratory birds nest and breed in the lap of this natures exuberance. The most commonly noticed Indian Saras Crane with its long bare legs, elongated head and red head gracefully pecks insects while walking around the lake with dance like movements. This bird which flaunts the status of being the tallest flying bird on earth is often see in pairs and has over centuries inspired poets and artists with its elegance and beauty.

Day 1 * We take train to reach Ahmadabad (100km) or Viramgam (30km) in the morning.
  * Transfer to the Resort at LRK
  * Have lunch & relax at resort.
  * After lunch, jungle safari to little Rann to see some rare animal species….
  * LRK is like a heaven for wildlife enthusiasts which attracts tourist towards it.
  * Dinner and Overnight stay at the resort.


Day 2 * Leave early morning for jungle safari.
  * Return to resort for breakfast. Some free time for relaxation.
  * After Lunch, again we shall leave for a jungle safari at around 2:00 pm.
  * Overnight stay at the resort.



Day 3 * Post breakfast proceed to Thol bird Sanctuary.
  * Birding at Thol Bird Sanctuary.
  * After lunch proceed to Ahmadabad to catch the train back for Mumbai.



Costing and other details

Tour cost: Rs. 17,400/- per person + Rail or Airfare. (Minimum for 6 people on twin sharing basis)

Any additional person in the same room will cost extra on per day basis. Only one additional person per room is allowed.
In case of group size less or more than 6 people or not in multiple of 6 people, the new cost will be applicable

Railfare : Generally booked 60 days in advance. If not available at the time of booking then tatkal tickets needs to be booked which will incur additional cost. The exact fare will be known at the time of booking.


Tour Cost Includes :

- 2 nights 3 days stay in Air conditioned room.

- All meals, 4 safaris. Max 6 people in one gypsy.

- Pick and Drop from Ahmadabad Railway station in AC car.

Tour Cost Does not Include :

- Rail or Airfare
- Any personal expense such as Laundry, any extra meals not mentioned above, liquor, etc.


Please Note

- Keep the forest & surrounding area clean.

- Leaving your garbage anywhere in the forest is not allowed.

- Smoking and Alcohol in the forest is not allowed.

- Your seat will be confirmed only after full payment for the tour.

- Gypsy Safari Bookings and Train Bookings run 90 days in advance.

* Woollen clothing(for winter season), Summer clothing (for summer season)

* Comfortable sports shoes with a decent grip

* Personal clothing, Sunscreen lotion, Cap, Scarf, Torch (Mandatory)

* A camera.. or else you will miss the show

* Plastic bags (for wet things) and a water bottle

* Personal Medical kit, Do not carry any valuables or jewellery.
